Zwakala Magoebaskloof #GoLimpopo
Will all the real beer lovers please stand up and zwakala at Magoebaskloof for a craft beer retreat in the middle of the forest!
It’s pretty simple ladies … this is a roadtrip! If you and your friends are die-hard beer fans, hire a mini bus and drive down to Zwakala Brewery in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Nestled in the Magoebaskloof Mountains overlooking the Wolkberg Mountains, Zwakala (like its name) suggests calls for those who appreciate the smell of barley and the taste of the hops to “come closer” and enjoy the award-winning craft beers under the African sun.
It is only a four-hour drive from Johannesburg, but if being behind the wheel for a long period of time cramps your style, you’ll need to take turns with your buddies. However, if you opt to travel alone because you’re a solo tourist, you’ll have the breathtaking scenic views keeping you company throughout your journey. It is always adviseable to stop on the way for a little breather. Sit down for lunch at Mike’s Kitchen in Polokwane before continuing with your trip and take your time, as you build up your energy for what lies ahead.
So why should you drive more than 300km just for a brewery?
Why you should visit Zwakala
It isn’t only beer you’ll enjoy with your favourite friends or even family; this brewery with a charming set-up has big windows that overlook beautiful mountains. You can have a beer-tasting session and if you’re really not into beer, we hope you’re a G&T type of lady as they also offer Blueberry Gin & Tonic on tap. The hopeless romantics can pack a picnic basket or you can take a forest walk to the river nearby to enjoy your drinks to the sound of water flowing. For those not into nature and scenic vibes, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are outdoor games you can play such as life-size jenga, badminton and corn hole.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]There’s no doubt you’ll get tipsy, so rather than spend the night in lockup for a DUI, book yourself into the Zwakala River Retreat, which is a walking distance, or at Magoebaskloof Hotel 10km away. Staying the night allows you to explore the town the following day and, in Magoesbaskloof, there are activities such as zip-lining and paint balling to enjoy at Magoebaskloof Adventures. On your way home, take a #shotleft to Bakone Malapa to learn more about the rich history and heritage of Pedi people.
