An active and outdoor lifestyle offers a multitude of benefits that cannot be outweighed; however, this does at times predispose us to specific injuries. So arm yourself with the knowledge and ideal products to get your family back on track in the event of a setback.   1. Never underestimate the sun – You’re going to need constant sun and heat protection, both inside and out. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of summer holiday illness, so always drink clean water. Also make sure you protect your skin in the form of protective clothes and sunscreen. Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to bind to the skin.

  2. Proper joint support – Good-quality shoes with great support can help to avoid sprained and twisted ankles. However, rambling over rough terrain can easily take its toll no matter how good your shoes are. It is important to know how to deal with a sprain.  The RICE treatment method is usually recommended; get rest, use ice to reduce inflammation, apply compression if necessary, and elevate the foot.

  3. Don’t get burnt – The sun is not the only source of potential burns when it comes to the summer season. Most likely, you’ll regularly be cooking over open coals or gas flames. Accidents happen so quickly and easily. Be well aware of fire hazards. Always take the proper safety precautions and ensure that children keep their distance around fires, a hot braai and coals, grill equipment, gas lighting and candles.

  4. Soothe insect bites and irritations – Along with the great weather comes mosquitoes and other biting insects that can compromise your comfort. Irritating stings and bites need to be treated. Avoid scratching, as it will lead to infections. Invest in natural insect repellents.

  5. Treat grazes, scratches and other wounds – Injuries that break the skin, however slight, must be properly treated. First stop any bleeding and then thoroughly clean the wound. Use clean or mineral water for proper and safe wound cleansing. Topical ointments with anti-bacterial properties will help to protect the wound and support healing.
