In 2011, pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline pronounced South Africa as the “the third-fattest nation in the world”. In 2013, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington released the results of a Lancet study focusing on 188 countries. It revealed that 70% of women in South Africa are overweight and 42% are obese.
Obesity can be genetic or lifestyle induced through overeating, a diet high in simple carbohydrates, frequency of eating, slow metabolism, physical inactivity and medications, but the biggest cause is the consumption of fast foods.
