Sun City Dazzles With Local Stars

The 23rd installment of the South African Music Awards, held at the Sun City Superbowl, was all glitz and glamour, with local celebrities celebrating the music magic.

The luxury resort in North West province has hosted 14 of the 22 SAMA’s since its launch in 1994 and perfectly complemented the music lovers and artists, who were dressed to impress, especially the vivacious hosts, Somizi Mhlongo and Tumi Morake.

The night kicked off with rap sensation Khuli Chana and Kwesta, featuring rock star Kurt Darren, while Afro pop sensation and vocal powerhouses such as Kelly Khumalo, Robbie Malinga and Musa blazed the stage as well. Essays Of Africa May/June 2017 cover star and newcomer, Amanda Black picked up most of the awards including Best Newcomer of the Year, Best Female Artist of the Year, Best Album of the Year and Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album, making her a four time SAMA winner on her debut album.

Cementing him as a force to be reckoned with in hip hop, Kwesta won Best Male Artist of the Year, Best Rap Album and Highest Airplay. On 26 May 2017, he already took home Best Collaboration for his hit, ‘Ngud’. Dance pair Black Motion took home two awards, including Best Duo/Group of the Year and Best Dance Album; Dr Malinga was awarded Best Kwaito Album, while Vusi Nova secured the award for Best Afro Pop Album.

Gospel sensation Rebecca Malope, Don Laka and Babsy Mlangeni were honoured with Lifetime Achievement awards and international soprano singer, Pretty Yende, received the International Recognition Award for her work in opera around the world. The talented saxophonist, Bongani Radebe, played a moving memoriam tribute to South African artists we’ve lost, including Sifiso Ncwane and Mandoza. ‘Wololo’ hit-maker Babes Wodumo brought a memorable night of musical magic to a sexy end.
