Standard Bank Polo In The Park Marks An African First With The First Action Polo On The Continent
The first ever Action Polo on the African Continent is set to take place at Joburg’s most renowned lifestyle resort, Steyn City, this November.
Action Polo has taken off like wildfire globally, in various forms, amongst which Snow
Polo, Beach Polo, Gladiator Polo and of course Park Polo, which makes this spectacular African first, the perfect choice for Standard Bank to headline, as Africa’s biggest bank. The Standard Bank Polo in the Park will be the most spectacular polo event in SA this year, and a perfect way to end off the year in style, whether it is to celebrate the arrival of Summer, or celebrating your Year End Party in the ultimate style.
By positioning the city of Joburg alongside other top polo loving cities around the world, the Standard Bank Polo in The Park is able to join the ranks of top global Action Polo playing cities such as LA, Miami, London, Dubai and more, and form part of the international Action Polo social calendar, therefore attracting not only a Pan-African, but indeed a global audience. Combining a sensational polo line-up in a brand-new format of polo with spectacular hospitality, riveting entertainment and a programme of luxury lifestyle experiences that will showcase the City of Gold like never before, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
Park Polo has a unique format in that it is a very fast form of action polo; it is therefore incredibly exciting and action packed to watch. The rules of the game have been tweaked to make the game faster and to bring the spectators closer to the action by way of an arena style polo playing field, which for this event, Steyn City built from scratch. The Rules of Park Polo has been simplified the traditional rules of polo so that newcomers to the sport will be able to follow the action without any prior knowledge of the game.
The theme for the 2019 event has also just been announced as “Polo through the Ages”,
and will showcase the iconic countries and cities that polo first became famous in, from
Persia, where it all started 2000 years ago, to Shanghai, China; Jaipur, India; Barcelona,
Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and of course, our beloved Joburg representing Africa.
The event theme will take a look at the narrative of polo through the eyes of its very rich cultural history. The authentic, cultural décor elements and experiences that guests will get to experience on the day will be juxtaposed against this modern form of ‘Action
Polo’ never seen in SA before.
The Standard Bank Polo in The Park is not only about polo, but about the lifestyle that accompanies the sport of kings. The event boasts an Aspire Art Pop-Up Gallery, a Bulgari Jewellery Lounge, a luxury fashion emporium (including sunglasses by Freckle Eyewear and a showcase by Sandton City’s Diamond Walk), entertaining jazz and hip hop performances, and a luxury car showcase. Standard Bank decided to partner with South Africa’s most formidable luxury events and marketing company to make its first foray into polo, The African Deluxe Company, who is committed to moving South Africa forward and to showing the world that South Africa can seamlessly, and repeatedly, host world-class, iconic luxury events that are worth traveling for, and that South Africa is a country worth investing in. One of the 3 African Deluxe Company partners, Anina Malherbe-Lan co-founded the iconic Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo Cape Town more than 10 years ago, so excellence, creativity and world-class hospitality is to be expected, and will be brought to Joburg polo lovers in spectacular style.
The event is expected to be attended by top South African business people, local and
international celebrities, VVIPs, and media, and offers a scenic day out in the City of
Gold, filled with beautiful people, unforgettable experiences, chic fashion, and art and
jazz on the side-lines.
