How To Beat Gym Germs

For some people, the gym is like a second home. But they are also hotbeds for germs and if you’re not careful, you could end up with strep throat, athlete’s foot, and even worse.

A study by Fitrated.com found that some gym equipment harboured 350 times more bacteria than your average toilet. The study examined 27 pieces of equipment at three different gyms, and it concluded that the three pieces of equipment with the most bacteria were exercise bicycles, free weights and treadmills.

Wintergreen gives you five ways to protect yourself against gym germs:

  1. Most gyms request that you disinfect machines after you’ve used them, but to avoid coming into contact with other people’s germs, disinfect equipment before you use it as well.

  2. Don’t walk around barefoot. Wear flip-flops in the shower to avoid coming into contact with germs that cause infections like athlete’s foot.

  3. Avoid touching your face during your workout.

  4. Wash your hands thoroughly after your workout and change out of your gym clothing as soon as you’re finished exercising.

  5. Use products that eliminate germs (bacteria and fungi) on a variety of surfaces such as the Protect Anti-Microbial Surface Spray.
