Have You Had These Five Health Check-ups?

Going to the doctor for check-ups can be time consuming and dreadful, but it is important in the early identification and treatment of problems.

If you haven’t checked any of these recently, we suggest you do so immediately:

  1. Blood pressure – Simply visit your family doctor, GP or local clinic to check your blood pressure once per year, especially if you hardly get sick.

  2. Mammogram – Life really beigns at 40! So the minute you turn the big FOUR ensure the first thing you put in you to-do-list is an annual mammogram appointment. Schedule them for after your monthly menstrual cycle.

  3. Pap smear – Are you between 21 and 65 years of age and sexually active? Visiting a gynaecologist for physical exam at least once a year is highly recommended.

  4. Bone density – According to The National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (NOFSA), one in three women will develop osteoporosis or the ‘silent disease’. Get a bone density scan to check if you’re suffering from reduced bone strength.

  5. Diabetes – This is only done every three years and it is for women who are 50 years and over.

  6. Cholesterol ­– If you’re over the age of 45, you need to get your cholesterol checked regurlarly. If not, it is still recommended if you smoke, have heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.
