Eyebrow Threading Vs Waxing

Lauren Matthew’s verdict on the best method for eyebrow grooming…

My natural eyebrows are unruly to say the least. For years I have tried to tame them at home using tweezers (and they are notoriously difficult to shape) but I had succeeded in creating a fairly decent brow at home, or so I thought.

The first time I had my brows threaded, I felt completely transformed! I was getting my hair styled for a dance competition when one of the hairstylists mentioned that he did brow threading and would like to fix my eyebrows. I willingly allowed him to work his magic and have become hooked on his work ever since. Not only was he affordable, but he also delivered an eyebrow aesthetic I had thought was completely unattainable for my natural eyebrows.

I have subsequently visited the salon every few weeks to reshape my eyebrows, but my schedule has been quite chaotic recently, so I could only squeeze in an appointment for an eyebrow wax at a reputable salon down the road from my office. Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations.

My Waxing Experience

I explained to the aesthetician that I would like my brows to be reshaped and an arch created. The waxing itself was relatively pain free, although her tweezing was rough and delivered a scratching sting. Upon viewing my eyebrows post treatment, I realised that she had in fact done absolutely nothing to reshape my eyebrows into a neat arch having merely tidied up the stray hairs. The end result was the same amateur look I achieve within five minutes at home with a pair of tweezers. In essence, it was a complete waste of my time and money.

My Threading Experience

I found threading to be faster and significantly less uncomfortable than waxing. The aesthetician had more control over the shape of my brows with the use of thread. The main difference between methods was that the aesthetician delivering the threading also trimmed the long, straggly hairs that fell within my shaped eyebrows to achieve further precision. I had never realised before just how the shape of my eyebrows defined my features, and the application of powder to soothe the threaded area was a good finish (a step missed by the waxing salon).

My Overall Verdict

Threading seems to be the better option if you struggle with achieving ‘the perfect eyebrows’ at home. However, if you are happy with your natural eyebrow shape and cannot work up the nerve to tidy them at home, waxing may be the option for you.
