Does Computational Bias Exist?

Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student, Joy Buolamwini was working with facial recognition software only to realise the software didn’t recognise her face because she’s black.

She explains that this is “because the people who coded the algorithm hadn’t taught it to identify a broad range of skin tones and facial structures.” On TED Talks, Buolamwini talks about how she has made it her own mission “to fight bias in machine learning, a phenomenon she calls the coded gaze.”
