On normal lazy days, simple takeaways make for a ‘good dinner’ at home, but when your significant other (SO) is turning a year older during the week and turning up is not an option, cosy and classy is definitely called for. Introducing Maximillien Restaurant in Sandton, the perfect venue for an evening of fine cuisine and excellent entertainment.
After a crazy Monday at the office, the SO and I only had an hour to navigate the city’s peak hour traffic to make it in time for our 7pm reservation, but hunger was motivation enough and we arrived at restaurant adjacent to Legacy Corner Mall just in time. Two of my colleagues had tasted the new menu just a week prior to this date and, I have to admit, I was chomping at the bit to sample some of the delicious dishes they had enthused about. Fasting for the day to ‘make room’ for this special dinner didn’t help the hunger pangs!

Our waiter escorted us to a table in the corner, which was perfect for the romance I was hoping to share with my man. Sipping on our drinks, we perused the extensive menu with anticipation before finally deciding on a calamari starter for me (a favourite), while my partner took the waiter’s recommendation of the Wagyu Beef Fillet, a new dish with a “unique taste”. My Crispy Calamari with a hint of New Orleans was cooked to perfection and I ate it selfishly, as I watched him navigate the “newness” of his dish.
Being the South African woman that I am, I love my meat so choosing a main course was easy and the Lamb Rack with root vegetables and herbed polenta was simply sublime. The man’s adventurous spirit was rewarded this time with his selection of the Norwegian Salmon Poached in Coconut Cream, which he finished with a look of satisfaction.

With starters and mains done and dusted, we looked forward to the signature Chocolate Dome for couples that we had heard so much about! To our surprise, the live band sang a soft ‘Happy Birthday’ to the SO as our waiter placed a chocolatey dream between the two of us. A generous drizzle of warm sticky caramel sauce saw our dome cave in to reveal a rich fondant and any thought of weight-loss goals dissipated with the tantalising aroma of sweet caramel and bitter dark chocolate. Competing for every mouthful, this is a dessert you might want to order just for yourself (forget the couple thing!), but knowing I would be rewarded for my birthday generosity, I let him savour the last magical mouthful.
On the practical side, I left with about R650 less in my purse (drinks excluded), which seemed a very reasonable price to pay for a romantic three-course a la carte dinner in the heart of Sandton with the love of my life. Without hesitation, I recommend that you check it out and spoil that someone special with a maxi-million different flavours of urban cuisine prepared by Chef Nair!
